Race Summary

Ralf Schumacher claimed a memorable victory at the Canadian Grand Prix, beating his brother Michael in a thrilling Schumacher family duel at Montreal. The younger brother controlled the race from the front for Williams-BMW, holding off Michael's determined Ferrari challenge to take his second win of the season. Mika Häkkinen completed the podium for McLaren, while championship leader Michael had to settle for second.

The brotherly battle provided excellent entertainment, with both Schumachers pushing hard but racing fairly throughout. Ralf's victory proved that Williams-BMW had developed a genuinely competitive package and that he could beat his illustrious brother on merit. Despite finishing second, Michael extended his championship lead as his main rivals Coulthard and Häkkinen struggled. The result at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve demonstrated that while Michael and Ferrari dominated the championship, individual race victories would not come easily, with Williams and McLaren capable of winning when their cars held together.
