Race Summary

Jean Alesi finally claimed his maiden Formula 1 victory in his 91st Grand Prix start, delivering an emotional triumph for Ferrari in Canada. The Frenchman held off Rubens Barrichello and Eddie Irvine's Jordans in a thrilling finish, breaking down in tears on the podium as years of frustration and near-misses finally ended with a win at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Alesi had led races before but had never converted that speed into victory, often falling victim to mechanical failures or tactical errors. In Montreal, everything finally came together. Starting from fifth on the grid behind pole-sitter Michael Schumacher, Alesi drove the race of his life to claim a popular victory that was celebrated throughout the paddock. Barrichello finished second in a superb drive for Jordan, while Irvine completed an all-Jordan second row in third place, the team's best result of the season.

The race was marked by high attrition, with both championship protagonists retiring. Schumacher suffered gearbox failure while leading, while Damon Hill crashed out after contact with another car. Their retirements opened the door for Alesi to shine, and he seized the opportunity with both hands. The victory was Ferrari's first since Germany 1994 and provided a rare bright spot in what had been a difficult season for the Scuderia. For Alesi, it justified Ferrari's faith in him and proved he had the talent to win at the highest level.
