Race Summary

Eddie Irvine won again at Hockenheim, leading home Mika Salo in a Ferrari one-two finish. Salo, deputizing for the injured Michael Schumacher, had controlled most of the race but obeyed team orders to let Irvine through for the victory to support the championship challenge. Heinz-Harald Frentzen finished third for Jordan after a strong drive.

The team orders decision sparked debate about racing ethics, with many feeling Salo deserved his maiden victory after dominating the race. However, Ferrari's priority was clear - supporting Irvine's title bid. The victory extended Irvine's championship lead over Häkkinen, who retired with mechanical problems. Ferrari's one-two demonstrated their strength even without Schumacher, with Salo proving to be an excellent replacement driver.
