Biography

Patrick Daniel Tambay (25 June 1949 - 4 December 2022): French racing driver from Paris who competed in Formula One from 1977 to 1986. Achieved 2 Grand Prix victories and 11 podiums across 114 races with Surtees, Theodore, McLaren, Ligier, Ferrari, and Renault. Won the 1977 Can-Am Championship before making his F1 debut with Surtees. His most poignant moment came when Ferrari signed him to replace the late Gilles Villeneuve after the Canadian's death in 1982.

Tambay honored his predecessor's memory by winning the 1982 German Grand Prix at Hockenheim, Villeneuve's favorite circuit, wearing the number 27 in tribute. Won again at the 1983 San Marino Grand Prix for Ferrari. Finished fourth in the 1983 World Championship. Known for his smooth, calculated driving style contrasting with Villeneuve's spectacular approach. After two seasons with Ferrari, moved to Renault for 1984-1985 before a brief return with Haas Lola in 1986.
