Race Summary

Damon Hill secured an emotional victory at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, breaking Michael Schumacher's winning streak and keeping his championship hopes alive. Starting from second on the grid behind pole-sitter Schumacher, Hill drove a measured race to take his second win of the season. The Englishman controlled the pace after taking the lead, finishing ahead of Schumacher's Benetton, with Mark Blundell claiming an unexpected podium for Tyrrell-Yamaha after several leading cars encountered problems.

The victory was significant for Hill and Williams as they finally began to extract performance from the troublesome FW16 through setup changes and updates implemented after Imola. Schumacher's second place kept him comfortably ahead in the championship, but Hill's win suggested the title fight was far from over. The race also saw the first implementation of several safety measures introduced post-Imola, including reduced engine capacity in the pit lane and stricter safety car procedures.
