Race Summary
Damon Hill took a critical victory at Spa-Francorchamps while Michael Schumacher served the first race of his two-race ban for the Silverstone black flag incident. Hill dominated from start to finish, taking full advantage of his rival's absence to close the championship gap. Mika Häkkinen finished second for McLaren, continuing his impressive rookie season, while Jos Verstappen claimed his second consecutive podium for Benetton. Rubens Barrichello had taken a stunning maiden pole position for Jordan in wet qualifying but couldn't convert it into a podium finish in the race.
The race was run in changeable weather conditions typical of Spa, testing the drivers' wet weather skills throughout. Hill's victory reduced Schumacher's championship lead from 35 points to 21 points with five races remaining, suddenly bringing the title fight back to life. However, the German would miss one more race at Monza, giving Hill another opportunity to close the gap before their showdown in the final races of the season.
