Race Summary

Michael Schumacher took a dominant victory at the Hungaroring, converting pole position into his seventh win of the season on one of Formula 1's most demanding circuits. The German controlled the race from start to finish, while Damon Hill could only manage second place despite pushing hard throughout. Jos Verstappen secured his first career podium with third place for Benetton, deputizing for the injured JJ Lehto, in what proved to be the Dutchman's only F1 podium finish.

The victory was crucial for Schumacher as it extended his championship lead before his two-race ban would come into effect. The Hungarian GP showcased Schumacher's complete mastery of the Benetton-Ford package, as he set fastest lap and dominated qualifying and the race. Hill's second place kept him in mathematical contention, but with Schumacher 35 points ahead and having won seven of ten races, the championship was increasingly looking like a formality for the German driver.
