Race Summary

Damon Hill secured a crucial Williams one-two finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix, leading home teammate David Coulthard in sweltering Budapest conditions. The victory kept Hill's faint championship hopes alive and demonstrated Williams' superiority at the tight, twisty Hungaroring, where horsepower mattered less than mechanical grip and driver precision.

Hill dominated from pole position, controlling the race from start to finish and never looking threatened. Coulthard followed him home in second place, securing maximum points for Williams in the constructors' championship. Gerhard Berger finished third for Ferrari, while Michael Schumacher could only manage fourth after struggling with the Williams' pace on a circuit that didn't favor Benetton's chassis characteristics. The result reduced Schumacher's championship lead, though he still held a commanding advantage with five races remaining.

The Hungarian Grand Prix was run in extreme heat, testing both drivers and machinery to their limits. Hill's victory was his fourth of the season but came too late to mount a serious championship challenge, as Schumacher's points buffer remained substantial. Nevertheless, the Williams one-two demonstrated the team's potential and raised questions about why they hadn't challenged Schumacher more consistently throughout the year. The race also highlighted Coulthard's development as a driver, the young Scot delivering a mature performance to secure valuable points.
