Race Summary

Ronnie Peterson claimed his first victory of the season at Paul Ricard, the Swedish star's spectacular driving perfectly suited to the fast, flowing French circuit. Peterson's ability to maintain incredible speed through the long, sweeping corners demonstrated why many considered him the fastest driver in Formula 1, even if his sometimes ragged style cost him consistency. Cevert's second place kept him in mathematical championship contention, though Stewart's dominant points lead made the Scot's third title virtually assured. Carlos Reutemann's third place for Brabham marked the Argentine's emergence as a future championship contender, his smooth style and natural speed catching the attention of Ferrari scouts.
