Biography

Reine Tore Leif Wisell (30 September 1941 - 20 March 2022): Swedish racing driver from Motala who participated in 23 Formula 1 World Championship Grands Prix between 1970 and 1974, achieving one podium and 13 championship points. He won the Swedish Formula 3 Championship in 1967 before entering Formula 1 with Team Lotus as a late-season replacement for John Miles in 1970, making a spectacular debut with third place at the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen—the best result of his F1 career. Retained by Gold Leaf Team Lotus for 1971, Wisell's best results were fourth places in South Africa and Austria, collecting nine points to finish 12th in the championship. He joined the five-car BRM team for 1972 before making a final F1 appearance at the 1974 Swedish Grand Prix with a works March 741-Ford.

Beyond F1, Wisell achieved a superb Formula 2 victory at the wet 1973 Eifelrennen at the Nürburgring, demonstrating his wet-weather ability. After his racing career, he taught advanced driving techniques and remained active in historic racing events until his death at age 80.
