Race Summary
Michael Schumacher bounced back from his Canadian retirement to dominate the French Grand Prix at Magny-Cours, reclaiming control of the championship race with a commanding performance. The German driver led from lights to flag, controlling the race from pole position and never looking threatened despite pressure from the Williams drivers throughout.
Damon Hill finished second after a strong drive from pole position, but he couldn't match Schumacher's pace in the race. David Coulthard completed the podium in third for Williams, securing a decent haul of points for the team but falling short of victory. The result extended Schumacher's championship lead back to a comfortable margin after Hill's second place limited the damage from the Canadian retirement. Jean Alesi finished fourth for Ferrari, unable to repeat his Canadian heroics.
The French Grand Prix marked Schumacher's fourth victory of the season and demonstrated his ability to respond under pressure. His flawless drive at his team's home race (Benetton being based in Witney, England, but with strong French heritage) showcased the mental strength that would define his career. Williams showed improved race pace but still couldn't match Schumacher's combination of speed and consistency, a pattern that would continue throughout the season.
