Race Summary

Nigel Mansell kept his fading championship hopes alive with a commanding victory at Jerez's inaugural Spanish Grand Prix, dominating from pole position while teammate Nelson Piquet could only manage fourth after a troubled race. The Briton's win narrowed the championship gap heading into the final two races, though Piquet's points advantage meant he remained the favorite for the title. Alain Prost delivered an excellent second place for McLaren, with Stefan Johansson completing an impressive one-three finish for the TAG-Porsche powered team.

The Spanish Grand Prix demonstrated Mansell's superior speed when everything aligned, as his victory was dominant rather than contested. However, the championship mathematics meant even with superior pace, he needed Piquet to suffer retirements or poor results to overcome the Brazilian's consistent point-scoring throughout the season. The race highlighted the tension within Williams, as the teammates' relationship had deteriorated into barely concealed mutual contempt - neither driver willing to assist the other's championship challenge despite racing for the same team.
