Race Summary
Nelson Piquet secured his second World Championship with victory at the European Grand Prix at Brands Hatch, crossing the line ahead of Alain Prost in a race that decided the title. The Brazilian's measured drive demonstrated the tactical awareness that had defined his season, extracting enough pace from the BT52 to control the race without taking unnecessary risks. Prost finished second knowing he had been beaten by superior consistency rather than outright speed.
Nigel Mansell completed the podium for Lotus, giving the future World Champion his first top-three finish. Piquet's championship was Brabham's second drivers' title and validated Gordon Murray's innovative BT52 design. The victory also confirmed BMW's arrival as a major force in Formula 1 turbocharged racing. However, controversy would emerge post-season over Brabham's exotic fuel mixture that pushed regulatory boundaries.
