Gunnar Axel Arvid Nilsson (November 20, 1948 - October 20, 1978): A Swedish racing driver from Helsingborg, Nilsson's promising Formula One career was tragically cut short by cancer. He competed in Formula One from 1976 to 1977, winning one Grand Prix across two seasons with Lotus. Initially studying engineering at Stockholm University and serving as a submarine radio officer in the Swedish Navy, Nilsson's racing talent emerged through the junior formulae ranks, culminating in his victory at the 1975 British Formula 3 Championship. He signed with Lotus for 1976, making his Formula One debut at the South African Grand Prix.
Nilsson's sole victory came at the rain-soaked 1977 Belgian Grand Prix at Zolder, where he produced a magnificent drive, passing Niki Lauda's Ferrari around the outside with 20 laps remaining to secure a memorable win for Lotus. He signed to race for Arrows in 1978, but during a routine medical check-up in December 1977, Nilsson was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Unable to race due to his deteriorating health, he was forced to stand down before the season began. He dedicated his remaining months to founding the Gunnar Nilsson Cancer Foundation, which continues his legacy of supporting cancer treatment and research.
Nilsson passed away in London on October 20, 1978, at just 29 years of age, leaving behind a legacy that extends far beyond his single Grand Prix victory.
