Biography

Piero Taruffi (October 12, 1906 - January 12, 1988): An Italian racing driver and engineer from Rome, Taruffi was one of motorsport's most intellectual competitors. He participated in 18 Formula One World Championship Grands Prix between 1950 and 1956, achieving one victory at the 1952 Swiss Grand Prix and several podium finishes. Beyond F1, Taruffi was exceptionally successful in endurance and road racing, famously winning the 1957 Mille Miglia at age 50 in his final competitive race. Known as "The Silver Fox," Taruffi combined exceptional driving skill with scientific analysis of racing technique.

He authored influential books on racing theory and car dynamics, contributing to motorsport knowledge beyond his driving achievements. His engineering background allowed him to provide valuable technical feedback to teams, helping develop better racing cars. Taruffi's career spanned motorcycle racing, record attempts, and various forms of automobile competition from the 1920s through the 1950s.
