Biography

Ludovico Scarfiotti (18 October 1933 - 8 June 1968): Italian racing driver from Turin who competed in Formula One from 1963 to 1968. Born into motorsport aristocracy as grandson of Lodovico Scarfiotti, co-founder and former president of Fiat, and nephew of Fiat President Gianni Agnelli, Scarfiotti was a member of the prestigious Agnelli family. He first raced in 1953, winning his class in the 1956 Mille Miglia before achieving major success in endurance racing with Ferrari, winning both the 24 Hours of Le Mans and 12 Hours of Sebring in 1963. These victories prompted his Formula One debut at the 1963 Dutch Grand Prix with Ferrari.

Making sporadic F1 appearances over five seasons, Scarfiotti achieved glory at the 1966 Italian Grand Prix, winning in only his fourth world championship start at a track record speed of 136.7 mph. He became the first Italian in fifteen years to win the Italian Grand Prix and, as of 2024, remains the last Italian to achieve this feat. Across 10 championship starts, he scored 17 points with one victory and one pole position.

Scarfiotti died in 1968 during a hillclimbing event on the Roßfeldhöhenringstraße near Berchtesgaden, Germany, becoming the third Grand Prix driver to die that year following Jim Clark and Mike Spence. His Porsche 910 veered off track and catapulted down a tree-covered slope.
