
Jim Rathmann (July 16, 1928 - November 23, 2011): Born Royal Richard Rathmann in Alhambra, California, Jim was one of the most successful American racing drivers of his era. He won the 1960 Indianapolis 500 in one of the most famous races in history, beating Rodger Ward in a thrilling duel. Rathmann participated in 14 Formula One World Championship races (all Indianapolis 500s) between 1950 and 1963, achieving three podium finishes. Known for his consistency and car control, Jim was the younger brother of fellow racer Dick Rathmann.
Beyond the Indy 500, he competed successfully in various USAC Championship races and was highly respected by his peers. After retiring, Rathmann became a successful businessman in the automotive industry and remained a beloved figure in American motorsport until his death. His victory in the 1960 Indy 500 is still considered one of the greatest performances in the race's storied history.
