Biography

Dick Rathmann (January 6, 1926 - February 1, 2000): Born James Merwin Rathmann in Los Angeles, California, Dick was an American racing driver who competed primarily in the Indianapolis 500 during the 1950s. He participated in five Formula One World Championship races (all Indianapolis 500s) between 1950 and 1960, achieving his best finish of second place in 1952. Dick was the older brother of Jim Rathmann, who won the 1960 Indianapolis 500. Beyond the Indy 500, Dick raced in NASCAR and various other American racing series, demonstrating versatility across different racing disciplines.

His aggressive driving style and fearless approach made him a fan favorite at American oval tracks. After retiring from competition, he remained involved in motorsport as a car owner and mentor to younger drivers, contributing to the American racing scene throughout the latter half of the 20th century.
