Biography

Jim Rigsby (6 June 1923 - 31 August 1952): American racecar driver from Spadry, Arkansas who was based in Los Angeles and competed in the Indianapolis 500 during the early 1950s. He participated in two Formula One World Championship races (both Indianapolis 500s) in 1951 and 1952, with his best finish being 15th place in 1951. Rigsby had worked his way up through West Coast midget car and sprint car racing, demonstrating the typical progression of American oval track racers during that era. Known for his determination and work ethic, Rigsby was respected by fellow competitors despite limited financial resources.

Tragically, his promising career was cut short when he died in a sprint car racing accident in Salem, Indiana, at age 29. His death was another reminder of the extreme dangers faced by racers during the 1950s, particularly in sprint car racing where safety equipment and track protection were minimal. Rigsby's brief career exemplified the courage and passion of American racers who competed despite the risks.
