Race Summary

Rubens Barrichello produced his strongest performance of the season to win at Monza, holding off Michael Schumacher in an intense battle that thrilled the passionate tifosi on Ferrari's home circuit. The Brazilian controlled the Italian Grand Prix from pole position, resisting immense pressure from his world champion teammate in the closing laps as both Ferraris raced wheel-to-wheel through the high-speed Parabolica and Lesmo corners. The crowd erupted as the red cars swept across the line in formation, delivering Ferrari's eleventh one-two finish at their spiritual home.

Schumacher pushed Barrichello hard throughout the race, attempting to find a way past on Monza's long straights but never quite getting close enough to mount a serious overtaking attempt. The German's attacks added genuine excitement to a race that otherwise would have been a Ferrari procession, and he graciously accepted second place after an entertaining battle. Eddie Irvine claimed a surprise podium for Jaguar, the Ulsterman capitalizing on retirements ahead to secure his best result of the season and Jaguar's highest finish since rejoining F1.

Barrichello's Monza victory - his fourth of 2002 - came on merit and demonstrated his capability when given equal equipment and freedom to race. The Italian crowd celebrated both Ferraris with equal fervor, appreciating the intra-team battle that added drama to their home Grand Prix. Ferrari's dominance in Italy completed their sweep of both home races (San Marino and Italy), cementing their status as Italian sporting heroes and confirming their most successful season in the team's illustrious history.
