Biography

Duke Nalon (March 2, 1913 - February 26, 2001): Born Dennis Clayton Nalon in Chicago, Illinois, he was an American racing driver who competed primarily in IndyCar Championship racing. He participated in 11 Formula One World Championship races (all Indianapolis 500s) between 1950 and 1959, with his best finish being fourth in 1948 (before the championship began). Nalon was known for his aggressive driving style and willingness to push the limits, earning him respect from fellow competitors. He survived a horrific crash and fire at the 1949 Indianapolis 500 that left him with severe burns, but remarkably returned to racing after extensive recovery.

His comeback demonstrated extraordinary courage and determination. Though he never won the Indy 500, Nalon's tenacity and skill made him one of the most respected drivers in American oval racing during the 1940s and 1950s.
