Biography

Brett Lunger (born November 14, 1945): An American racing driver and former Marine, Lunger competed in Formula One during the mid-1970s. He participated in 34 World Championship Grands Prix between 1975 and 1978, driving for teams including Hesketh Racing, Surtees, March Engineering, McLaren, and BS Fabrications. Though he never scored a World Championship point, Lunger is perhaps best remembered for his heroic actions at the 1976 German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, where he was one of the first drivers on the scene of Niki Lauda's horrific crash and helped pull the Austrian driver from his burning Ferrari. Before Formula One, Lunger had success in American racing series including Formula 5000 and Can-Am.

His background as a Marine exemplified his courage, which was on full display during that fateful day at the Nürburgring. After F1, he continued racing in IMSA and other sports car series.
