Biography

Fred Agabashian (August 21, 1913 - October 13, 1989) was an American racing driver known for his success at the Indianapolis 500 during the 1950s. He participated in 13 Formula One World Championship races (all Indianapolis 500s) between 1950 and 1958, achieving one podium finish with third place in 1952. Agabashian's greatest achievement came in 1952 when he won the pole position for the Indianapolis 500 with a record-breaking qualifying speed in the revolutionary Cummins Diesel Special, the first diesel-powered car to compete at Indianapolis. Though the diesel car didn't finish the race, Agabashian's qualifying performance demonstrated his exceptional skill and willingness to embrace innovation.

Known for his smooth driving style and technical knowledge, he was highly respected by team owners and engineers. Beyond Indianapolis, Agabashian competed successfully in various USAC Championship races throughout the 1950s, establishing himself as one of American open-wheel racing's consistent performers.
